Cattle Abuse, Beef Recall Highlight Systemic Weaknesses
On Sunday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recalled 143 million pounds of frozen beef from Hallmark/Westland Meat Co. in California - the largest beef recall in U.S. history. The recall comes three weeks after the Humane Society posted a graphic video of cattle abuse at the plant, a supplier to more than 100,000 school lunch and child care programs in 36 states, including 700 schools in Minnesota. The abuse, including beating and shocking animals with electric prods, violated U.S. Department of Agriculture rules, and the agency initially informed state Departments of Education to put a "hold" on using Westland meat. Minnesota Education Commission Alice Seagren informed school districts where Westland ground beef had been shipped, "so that they can take appropriate action." Unfortunately, the recall affects beef products dating back to February 2006, and most have already been consumed.

POLICE say there is no evidence an adult entertainment maker is planning boat cruises for schoolies, plying them with alcohol and expecting to film nudity. It has been alleged that footage of schoolies exposing themselves would be used for Girls Gone Wild DVDs. Police looking into the matter say have found no evidence of any planned illegal activities. Sydney company Zeal Entertainment has bought the Australian rights to Girls Gone Wild, a US franchise that films drunken girls and sells the footage on DVD, it was reported today. Zeal owner Ryan Bowman was quoted as saying he plans to set up a stall on the Gold Coast to recruit schoolies for a $70 cruise. The cruise will go to a secret island north of Surfers Paradise, where participants will be served alcohol and stay for a few hours before a pub crawl back on the mainland.

Former model Heather Mills has been accused of cheating on estranged husband Sir Paul McCartney in the early days of their relationship. Mills dated British film editor Tim Steel on and off for three years, but broke off their relationship shortly after meeting the ex-Beatle at an awards ceremony in May 1999.
