Sania tamed by Venus after brave show
Melbourne, Jan 19 Sania Mirza put up a spirited fight against eighth-seeded American Venus Williams before crashing out in the third round of the women's singles event of the Australian Open here today. Sania gave the former Wimbledon champion a run for her money before losing 7-6 (0) 6-4 in an intense battle which lasted over one-and-a-half hours. In a gutsy performance, the 31-ranked Indian matched Venus shot for shot in the first set to drag it to a tie-breaker. However, the tie-breaker proved to be a one-sided affair as Venus swept past the Indian to go one up. The 21-year-old was mainly undone by the 30 (rpt 30) unforced errors, which spiked her chances. The Indian ace committed as many as 16 unforced errors in the second set which tilted the game in the favour of the American.

Tax bill ordeal at end?
While Montreal's civil service spent another day yesterday checking old city plans to see whether Delphis Delorme St. in Pointe aux Trembles was once part of Notre Dame St. E., The Gazette found the answer online in seconds. Land registry records for the homes on the street confirm it was formerly called Notre Dame. For instance, the 1977 sales deed on the home of Daniel Lefebvre and his wife, Nicole Panelli-Lefebvre, says the property "fronts on Delphis Delorme St. (also known under the name of the old Notre Dame St. E.)." .
A Short Introduction to Lindsay's New Maybe, Sorta, Kinda Boyfriend
It's always great when a big starlet like Lindsay Lohan is linked to a small-town boy. The local paper gets so excited, and we're able to learn more about him than from any tabloid. After being spotted leaving the Four Seasons with Linds in New York, Jeremy Greene quickly became her latest rumored suitor, and this is what we found out from his local Maine paper, the Morning Sentinel: He wears the hood of his jacket over his baseball hats. (Note to Jeremy: Please stop that.)Ali Lohan is hoping he makes a serious love connection with her big sis. During the interview with the paper, she texted him: "I asked her, and she said you're very handsome." Score! He's not sure he'll be able to save our Lohan, but he said, "I think I could probably be a good, positive person in her life."He would like his own reality show.
Junior's club is fixin' to glisten
The EpiCentre uptown may still just look like a big construction site, but one of its venues is set to open in less than a month. I tip-toed around the fences and through the rubble near College and Trade streets Wednesday to get a sneak peek at Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Whisky River, named after the country-western town he built on his land. But honky-tonk dive bar this is not. Think subtle touches such as a bar trimmed in belt buckles, rust-colored walls and splashes of dark wood paneling, then contrast that with exposed ceilings, sleek aluminum columns, track lighting, giant lava lamps and a main bar accented by tiny twinkling lights. Managing partner Chris Epstein describes the look as "somewhat of a western style, but with a modern feel and a rock 'n' roll edge." Or, as general contractor Scott Lucas of Harp Renovation calls it: " `Blade Runner' meets `Bonanza.' " There are three full-service bars throughout the 10,000-square-foot space and a stage that can be used for live music acts, dancing or more seating.

Cities jockey for position within NBA
Many think the town isn't big enough to support two professional sports teams. The latest population figure for Orleans Parish is 300,000, down from 455,000 before August 2005. If Shinn opts out of the lease and takes the Hornets elsewhere, he'd have to pay about $100 million in fees to minority partner Gary Chouest and the state of Louisiana. NBA commissioner David Stern told reporters in New Orleans last week that sports teams are an entertaining diversion, but they're not the key to the city's recovery. "When you're talking about education, housing, infrastructure and all the things the city is focusing on, sports is a good thing, but it pales in comparison," he said. "A good manufacturing plant with 3,000 jobs is a heck of a lot more important than a sports team." This weekend, the Big Easy is doing what it does best: party.

Under the Hood With Knight Rider 2.0: Trans Am vs. Ford Mustang ...
Then we brought in a prop maker to create side skirts and spoilers out of wood, smooth them out, and sent them to a fiberglass shop to make molds. Once the parts are formed from those molds, we finish them and attach them to the car." One of the cooler features of the Mustang KITT is air-ride suspension, which allows its driver to lower the car's ride height when the vehicle morphs from Hero to Attack mode. "When it goes on the offensive, it gets slammed to the ground," Moser chuckles. Very aggressive, indeed. There will be three models used in filming: Hero (essentially a stock GT500KR); Attack (the tricked-out model); and Remote Control (operated via RC, obviously). "All of the ‘transforming' will be done through CGI animation like in the Transformers movie," Moser admits. (Click here for behind-the-scenes digital wizardry from this summer's blockbuster flick.) For all you Trans Am holdouts, Mustang droolers and Hasselhoff haters, here's the very first look at all of the new KITT's gee-whiz specs and functionality, matched up to the original to determine which is better equipped for Hollywood crime-fighting.
